The Rains County Public Library will host “Renaissance Man,” an exhibit of Quitman artist Mitch Young’s work through Oct. 30 at the Rains County Public Library’s Meadows Cultural Center.
Young designs hand hewn furniture from native East Texas trees, two-dimensional computer graphic art utilizing geometry, optics and physics, oil on canvas and jewelry embedded with precious stones. The exhibit also features petrified wood and collections of shells, precious stones and petrified dinosaur bones.
Many of Young’s creations will be for sale. A ‘Renaissance Man” is described as one who can do all things if he will.
Young will explain his art methodology and talk about his evolvement as an artist on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m.
Young is pictured in his oil painting “Sunset.”
The library created the gallery to showcase local artists six years ago. It is on Highway 69 South in Emory.
In November and December "Silent Night...Merry & Bright" show will feature creches from around the world loaned to us by Janie Scarbrough of Scarbrough Haven and the walls will be laden with holiday-themed quilts that are done by fiber artists in our community. The cold months of January and February will host several artists: Cassie Austin's photography and recycled art, Jay & Niota Scott of Lakeside Crafts with whimsical creations, Valerie Sanders who creates fine watercolors, giclee's and ceramic tiles. In March and April the gallery will host the 4th annual Art in the Gallery High School Art Competition.
Last year, the competition had 90 entries with awards of over $600.00.
