Lake Fork Fishing Report for April 8-15, 2013

What a windy week! The winds switched from the west to the south and south east. The wind gusted to over 30 miles an hour with 2 to 3 foot rollers at times. The water temperatures rose to over 70 degrees is some parts of the lake. The Bass were temperamental to say the least. With all that being said, the patterns did not change. The bulk of our fish were caught on the Lake Fork Trophy Lures 5 inch Hyper Stick, split shot rigged. The best color was still green pumpkin/red. The water is clearing up in some areas in the lake, that means you need to go to the watermelon/red in those areas. A few fish can still be caught by throwing a watermelon/red Zoom Brush Hog in or around the bedding fish. With the spawn being over in the North end of the lake, the crank bait bite has started. Some really quality Bass are being caught in 12 to 14 foot of water on pearl and blue medium running crank baits. Yes the Crappie bite is still on. Numerous great Crappies are being caught in three to four foot of water around large stumps. The bait of choice is still medium minnows. The White Bass are still in the creeks bulking up on minnows getting ready to spawn. My clients and I caught several nice White Bass on the Rapala Suspending Huskie Jerks. They really pound it. The Catfish fishing was also very good this week when you could stay out on the baited holes. Punch bait and cut liver were the baits of choice. The best death was 12 to 16 feet. There are a few Catfish moving up and getting ready to spawn. For you fishermen still looking for a new bass boat you need to go into Nichols Marine in Longview, TX and check out there great selection of Ranger Bass Boats. The new 520c is really a beauty boat and a great buy. While you are at Lake Fork make sure you stop in to Lake Fork Marina and get the latest tackle that is being used on Lake Fork. They have fresh lively minnows to catch those Crappie and White Bass with. They also have a great supply of Strike King crank baits. You need to try one! We here at J & M Guide Service have a few days open in May for guided fishing trips. Give us a call Toll Free: 1-888-454-7037. See you on the water and don't forget those life jackets. Fishing Report from TPWD (Jan. 29)

GOOD. Water Stained; 43 degrees; 1.75 feet below pool. Bass are fair suspending jerk baits, spinner baits, and square bill crankbaits around creek channels in 5-10 feet. Offshore bass bite is fair with Alabama rigs, spoons and dropshots in 17-22 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service. Lake Fork crappie fishing has been as up and down as the weather and wind. With surface temperatures in the low 40s some crappie seem to be in shock. If you can get a day with light winds it seems the bite is a little better. If the winds are howling you may want to get some work done around the house or work on tackling that day. Downsizing baits and lines are helping to get a few more bites. Small minnows, small hand ties and small soft plastics are the key until we see the bite pick back up. Hold those baits super still just above crappie and they will either bite or swim off. If they swim off it’s time to find fish that will bite. Don’t spend too much time on one set of fish once the active bitters are caught. We are seeing huge numbers of fish as we cover water. Timber and brush in 20-62ft are holding fish in the mid lake and south areas. Report by Jacky Wiggins, Jacky Wiggins Guide Service.
